In one of the more audacious cases of photo tampering, Sambit Patra of the nation's rulling Bharatiya Janata Party repurposed one of the most famous photos from World War II to promote his party's proposed legislation to display the Indian flag more prominently on Indian college campuses. Appearing in a televised debate, he displayed a photo which he claimed depicted heroic Indian soldiers in the Kargil war hoisting the national flag. In reality, it was a doctored version of a famous photo of soldiers hoisting the U.S. flag over Iwo Jima. The crudely doctored version substituted a full-color version of the Indian flag.
