Report: Existing Neurocontrol, and What Is Wrong with It

Neurocontrol sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but it shouldn’t be that far out of the realm of possibility. Our brains were made to control millions of activities as the core of our being and the ultimate power over our whole body, with biological and electrical connections running to each and every part of it.

Neurocontrol, or mind control, isn’t just a fantasy. If our mind can control a complex organism like the body, what else is possible?

We are currently trying to imitate this artificially but there are some issues. In the cutting edge of prosthetics we can now clearly see where research has been most valuable.

Neurocontrol Assists with Mobility

Recent technological developments in science and medicine have led to innovative creations which use neurocontrol to guide prosthetic limb replacements for amputees, as well as other musculoskeletal supplement technology. The need for mind-controlled prosthetics, or neuroprosthetics, is high, as it can make a big difference to people’s health, quality and duration of life.

Neuro-controlled prosthetics integrate more naturally with the body, cause less strain on the amputee’s body and enable more precision in its functions.

How Do Neuroprosthetics Work?

Neuro-controlled prosthetics function by using a neural interface to interpret what the brain wants and converts that into the desired movement. As made evident by medical technologies like EEGs, every action or reaction, physical or emotional, that takes place in the brain, is caused by readable patterns of neurons connecting and communicating.

Neuro-guidance of a machine begins by thinking about the desired movement with normal intuitive thought. The connections that were once used by the now-amputated limb are reactivated within the brain by the new neuroprosthetic.

The Problem with Invasive Surgery

When movement is desired, the brain uses its motor neuron cortex and sends electrical impulses to the part of the body it wants to enable. The problem with this is that it requires surgery and medication to implant a sensor into the brain to be able to pick up the impulse.

The Problem of Accuracy of Movement

Much of the research into neurocontrol has been in the analysis of the complex data emitted by the brain, and translating that into something as fundamental as a movement of the arm has been achieved in prosthetics. However, there is a lot of processing needed to work out how far the prosthetic must move, how fast, all of the corresponding movements that need to be synchronized with it.

Accurate identification of movement is not only useful in prosthetics, of course, as there are many industries that are waiting for this technology to improve, such as gaming, esports, military, manufacturing and even business applications.

Possible Solutions to Neurocontrol Issues
