What is your motivation in creating Steve JobsSchools in the Netherlands?
The motivation behind Steve JobsSchools are my two children. I have one daughter born in 2009. My son was born in 1977. They grew up in two different worlds, mainly related to technology. By the time my daughter was two years old, she was already working with the iPad. I find it hard to understand that if I want to prepare my daughter for adult life after 2030, then I have to send her to the same school I sent to my child 30 years earlier. I came to the conclusion that schools are preparing children today for the past and not the future.
What do you see as the biggest drawback in the education system today?

There are a number of shortcomings, but I will narrow it down to three big issues: curriculum, social construction, and outdated school models.
Since the boom of the Internet and mobile devices, our relationship with information and knowledge has changed much compared to the past. Meanwhile, the curriculum in schools is mostly the same as the past decade even though the world is experiencing the greatest revolution relating to information and communication. However, almost like this really passes the government responsible everywhere for the national curriculum.
The second point is social context and construction, because children born in the 21st century live in a context and social framework that is completely different from those born even one or two decades earlier. I was born at a time before television was invented, and I do not know what’s happening in my own city. Today it is possible to know what’s going anywhere in the world anytime by pressing a button.
As I grow up, everyone has a bit of the same social experience, and this makes us more or less the same. Thanks to the technology that makes the world smaller, we can easily meet people with experiences that are different from our own experiences. I always use the following example of two children; one of which was born in the Amazon rainforest, and the other was born in New York. After 10 years, they will be very different in terms of what they know, and what they can do. I saw my daughter who was born in 2009, and my son was born in 1977 and I see them as two children in terms of the world in which they grew up.
A third problem is that the school’s ‘traditional’ model is still firmly rooted in the nineteenth century. It is highly industrial because it is based on a “one size fits all” philosophy, with one teacher being around 30 to 50 children. Currently, this approach does not work well because the demands on personal knowledge are so diverse, inconsistent with the current social framework of children, and this does not prepare children to discover what they will find when working in the future. And with the help of technology there are other ways to organize the school.
Moreover, adults are not aware of this “perfect storm” because their children experience in school the same as they experience. Adults are conditioned into the method of schooling in the past, and they are not aware of this. Therefore, they are satisfied to see their children learn as they do, even though their life and social context are completely different from their own parents.
How do you think students will learn in the next decade or 15 years or more?
Unfortunately, I am afraid many of them will still learn to use the old method. It is important to remember that people are generally conservative naturally, and educational systems around the world are almost completely dictated by government decisions. Steps of change are also slowing down when the government needs to decide to change something. While I do not think much will change in the next 10 years, I believe more and more people will begin to realize that the diplomas you receive while finishing your education will mean less. The employer shows more and more interest in what you know and how you apply it, rather than what you actually learn. This is because much of what is learned in relation to future work is learned rather than in school, but learn from classes like online, or through other experiences. In my opinion, this is why ‘traditional’ schools become increasingly irrelevant for those born in the 21st century.

Are you sure that personalized learning is the way forward for the future of all education systems?
Yes, I do. I also believe that “one size fits all” does not meet the demands of the 21st century.In most of the 20th century, “one size fits all” is very useful because one teacher to a large number of working children. This is because later (and now) education is based on a “just in case” philosophy. The government and the public assume that a student will leave school between the ages of 13 and 18, and will likely learn new academic concepts. I love the learning approach that combines all sorts of possibilities. More often than not, people think that if you like a particular approach, then you think that this is the only way to achieve something. For example, I have been accused of saying that teachers are no longer important, and technology can do their job. This is just the opposite!
I believe that technology can do the “routine” part of the work of any employee. This then allows employees to specialize in areas of their expertise that can not be done with automation. The combined approach can be a very smart way to have the best of the human world and the auto world. However, care should be taken to ensure one aspect is not greater than the other.
Are you using gamification at SteveJobs school?

Yes, we do. We integrate existing gamelan platforms with books and other learning materials that we use. We see this as the best way to meet our educational goals. Even so, there are still children who need more teacher-based activities.

Why did you decide to join BitDegree as a Cryptocurrency Advisor?

BitDegree has taken further security measures to protect the holders of the BitDegree token (BDG) and their ether (ETH) currency against cybercriminals during the sale of BitDegree tokens, which began on December 1, 2017.

The backers will transfer ETH * to the BitDegree crowdsale smart address (the address will be announced on December 1, 2017), and will instantly receive their BDG.
