ICO BitClave. 7 Private Search Engines that Respect Your Privacy

1.jpg

Official website of BitClave - https://www.bitclave.com/en/

Like many, you might be under that impression that Google’s speed and accuracy make it the best choice for your internet searches. Think again. Though Google casts a wide net and presents results quickly and in a simple format, its personalized search results is where it falls off the pedestal.

How does Google come up with that personalization? It tracks everything you do. In fact, Google may be the worst if you care about privacy; although it should be noted that other popular search engines like Yahoo and Bing are also tracking. Why? In part, for targeted advertising, but also because data itself is a commodity.

Search engines have been a part of the Web since before AOL and have always been a vital tool for finding very specific needles in an increasingly massive haystack. Search Engines are a blessing, but how can you utilize this important tool without sacrificing your privacy?

The first, most basic thing you can do to protect your privacy online is to find a search engine that respects your privacy, aka: “Private Search Engines.” These sites don’t collect or store your information.

In this article we’ll share our thoughts on seven search engines geared toward maintaining privacy. Our recommendation is to give them a try and see what feels right for you. Switching to one of these instead of Google or Bing is the first step to claiming control over your privacy and data footprint.

  1. DuckDuckGo (https://duckduckgo.com)

Extra credit for a fun, catchy name, DuckDuckGo is one of the top engines for optimal privacy, and they've been at it for years. Quite simply, it does not track its users, nor does it store search logs search logs or IP addresses. DuckDuckGo is community driven, one of the first to answer the call for a search engine directed at users who crave privacy. As far as the search experience, it is simultaneously simple and effective. You do have the ability to enable ads, which also support the community, but it won't hinder your results if you don't.

 2. StartPage (https://www.startpage.com)

StartPage bills itself as “the world's most private search engine,” which gets right down to it. When you search on StartPage, your information isn't tracked, period. In addition to solid privacy protection, this isn’t some upstart search engine that is weak in terms of crawling. StartPage uses an enhanced version of Google Search Engine Result Page (SERP, for short), which means you get the same benefits of Google Search, but without the hassle of data tracking. As a search engine, StartPage allows you to customize your results, which are available in a simplified format that doesn't require any fiddling, as well as the option for more advanced searches and the ability to filter results. The long and the short of it is that StartPage is a great search engine for effectiveness and simplicity.

 3. BitClave (https://www.bitclave.com)

If you want control of your data, BitClave is the answer. The decentralized search engine, powered by blockchain, empowers you to gain control over how your data is used, and then compensates you for that data. In other words, this search engine not only helps you find what you're looking for, but lets you ‘sell’ your data to any company you choose. Not only does this protect your privacy, it empowers you to be rewarded for sharing your data, if you choose.
 4. Hulbee (https://hulbee.com/)

As with the other search engines in our list, Hulbee is noted for privacy protection and for effectiveness. When you use Hulbee, neither your IP address nor any other identifiable information is collected. You also don't have to worry about cookies, geo-targeting or those tiresome government requests. The search result interface is straightforward, but with a nice flair, giving options for expanding or narrowing searches as well as searching within specific categories.

 5. Privatelee (https://privatelee.com)

Privatelee is all about simplicity. The front page is stripped-down and no nonsense, making Google look garish by comparison. There aren't a lot of search options; just web and images, but results come back quick and clean. One notable feature with Privatelee is its PowerSearch commands, which give a ton of power to the user in terms of specificity of results as well as result filtering.

 6. Lukol (https://www.lukol.com)

Lukol protects your privacy while retaining the accuracy of a Google search. Lukol takes the simple but direct approach of connecting to Google indirectly, by proxy. Since the proxy sits between you and Google, your personal information isn't available to Google. Consequently, the search results look like a Google search, with ads showing first and relevant hits further down the page. It’s a tad slower, but for privacy, you might be willing to trade a little time. A nice feature is the sidebar, where Lukol shows related news alongside the search results.

  1. Gigablast (https://www.gigablast.com/)

Gigablast is different primarily in that it’s open-source. There is a strong community aspect to it, and an over-arching ethos of privacy and user-empowerment. The community has been growing since the turn of the century, and aspects of the website look like they haven't changed much since 2000. When you search via Gigablast, you can be sure you're not being tracked. While the results page may look old-school, there are a lot of options for getting custom results.

To sum up: not all private search engines are created equal. As you can see, there are plenty of options to choose from when looking for Privacy-Friendly web-searches. Our list is not comprehensive, but we thought it worthy to provide an overview and present a comparison of some of the capabilities that are available. Just as some users prefer Google or Yahoo to Bing, or vice-versa, discriminating users should find a search experience that fits their needs while providing the added benefit of anonymity and privacy.
