Neuro-Controlled Prosthetic Limbs Are Here and They’re Better than Anything on the Market

4.jpg

In the United States of America alone there are nearly 2 million people who are in need of prosthetics. Just in the USA, this number increases by an estimated 500 people every single day.

There is no doubt that it’s a serious matter to lose a limb; a serious matter that has plagued humanity since its beginning. An example of that would be a prosthetic toe found in Ancient Egypt. The toe was made of wood, and is estimated to be around 3,000 years old.

Prosthetics were invented to help make life easier for amputees. Unfortunately, your average prosthetic found today on the market cannot replace the functionality of an arm or leg. It’s nearly impossible to accomplish everyday tasks with them.

As Melissa Loomis, who had an arm amputated, puts it “… All I want is to use my prosthetic just like my normal arm; open cans, button my shirt…”

Luckily, thanks to technological improvement in the past few years, completing everyday tasks with a prosthetic limb is moving out of the realm of the impossible. Neuro-controlled robotic technology allows amputees to control their prosthetic limb through their thoughts.

These futuristic prosthetics are possible thanks to the use of sensors around the limb. These prosthetics have the ability not to just recognize muscle patterns, but to replicate them; and can be moved almost as easily as you would a regular limb. This technology allows its users to grasp things with their prosthetic hand, lift things and even ‘feel’. As time goes on, it appears that these neuro-controlled prosthetics will become the norm and replace ordinary plastic or carbon fiber-made prosthetics altogether.

The goal is to produce a prosthetic which can do everything a human limb can do - and possibly, even go beyond.

Although this technology is still in its earlier stages of development and is currently produced at a higher price, there are a handful of companies that are dedicated to improving this technology.

One of these is Neurogress. Neurogress aims to create a new generation of prosthetics that can become one with the human body, and help change the lives of millions of amputees worldwide. Neurogress offers neuro-controlled prosthetics, and goes beyond currently offered technology in the market by completely removing the need for inserting sensors into the limb in order to control them.

This new technology has proven effective with distal limbs and experts praise it, claiming that it could very well become the new norm. The removal of sensors will dramatically reduce the need for multiple invasive surgical procedures, thus saving amputees the physical and mental fatigue of going into an operation.
The newly proposed prosthetic scheme by Neurogress will help shape the field of prosthetics and change the lives of millions of amputees worldwide.
