Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere

In the southern hemisphere, it is said that September, being the month of spring, is also the month of flowering, of colors, of new beginnings.

If we refer to the etymology of the word "spring" we will discover that it means something like "first greenness", which makes us think that after a harsh winter, it is logical to be happy to see the first shoots in the trees. In this season, besides growing and blooming the plants, the days are longer, having more hours of light, therefore more warmth in the environment. Consequently, usually associated with the month of spring with joy, as there are scientific studies that prove that due to the increase in daylight there is an increase in the production of the hormone called serotonin, which influences our mood. This hormone, it would be responsible for us to feel energetic and cheerful, especially in the spring.

Officially, the beginning of our spring is September 21, with the Spring equinox, and represents the time when the day is equal to the night, and that from this, the days will start to be longer, and Therefore, the shortest night. This phenomenon, like most of the phenomena of nature, has been observed by our ancestors and has acquired different meanings within different cultures, but always had as a common denominator the ideas of initiation, renewal of energy and balance, accompanied of rituals and offerings to nature and to different deities.

The point in common of the symbolic and cultural value that has been given to him from always, can be summarized in the representation of the "moment of awakening". It is metaphorically spoken of opening the eyes, of seeing beyond, perhaps not so much outside, but internally. Perhaps it is also a matter of resignifying (us) the spring, of marking us a beginning, a point of reference to begin our journey in the world, more aware of the other, and of everything that surrounds us.

We talked about resignifying, revaluing because it would be very easy to blame the winter for our lack of serotonin, but we must not forget that although the question is always our attitude towards the world, at the end of everything, the change is inward.
