With a wingspan of up to 2.9 meters, the bearded vulture is one of the largest airworthy birds in the world. He is the largest bird of prey in Europe, and with 225 to 250 breeding pairs one of the rarest.
Its wingspan is 2.30-2.83 m, its body length is 94-125 cm, its weight 4.5-7 kg.
The eyes are surrounded by a red ring, the intensity of the red reflects the mood of the bird. The more excited he is, the brighter the red.
Typical habitats of the Bearded Vulture are alpine and montane mountainous areas above the tree line. These areas are characterized by large differences in altitude, steep cliffs, good thermals and updrafts.
It is also important for the bearded vulture that there is a population of predators such as wolf and lynx and large birds of prey such as golden eagles in his habitat. He needs them, as he takes a part of the loot from them.
Its food consists of 80% bones of fallen animals and carrion. Young animals are still dependent on muscle meat, adult animals can almost exclusively feed on bones. An adult animal needs between 250 and 400 grams of bone every day. Bearded vultures drop the bones on rocks from a great height in order to crush them and to get cuniform pieces.
It can be found in Africa as well as in the Pyrenees, some mountain regions of southern Europe, also in the Tauern, in mountains of southwestern and central Asia, Mongolia and central China.
