Friday Is for Movies: Le Grand Bleu, by Luc Besson
When you think about Luc Besson, you probably think about Nikita. Or, the male counterpart of that character, Leon. Or, why not, The Fifth Element. Or even the highly popular franchise, The Transporter, with the "iron face" Jason Statham.
But you hardly think of a movie with 2 divers competing over who is the better one over the course of an entire lifetime. I personally consider Le Grand Bleu one of the most beautiful movies of Luc Besson. If not the most beautiful.
The imagery is magnificent, the story compelling and hardly predictable and the actors are doing a tremendous job. You will recognize a Rosanna Arquette in one of her best days, a Jean Marc Barr playing probably the role of his life and, of course, a Jean Reno (the Leon) at the beginning of his fulminant career. The music of Eric Sera would complete the creation of an almost magical territory, where water and air are blending into a continuous story of friendship, competition and the quest for the impossible.
As in any other movie of Luc Besson there is a lot of humor, a lot of space in the story and a clear cut of all characters.
Since spring is almost here (at least in the northern hemisphere) and diving could soon be a real option, I think spending two hours watching Le Grand Bleu would be rewarding.
