Yggdrasil The Tree of Life

Yggdrasil

Yggdrasil, in the Norwegian mythology is the name of the tree of life, an ash or a yew that reaches over the sky and is spreading its branches and connects all the nine worlds. Yggdrasil is always green, and from it comes dew that dripping down on the earth.

There are many animals living in Yggdrasil. At the top is the eagle's lightning, and at the roots of the tree lies the dark power Nidhogg, which is a snake or dragon. A squirrel, Ratatosk, runs up and down on the tree's trunk and promotes verbs and curses between the eagle and Nidhogg, which are in conflict with each other. Yggdrasil also has four deer and a goat (Heidrun). Before Ragnarok shakes Yggdrasil and apparently goes under the world fire.

Yggdrasil has three roots, which extend far below the ground. One extends towards the land of the ages. Under this root there is the Urdar well, as the witches pour water from above the tree, so that it stays healthy. Here, in the shelter of the tree, the gods hold things. The other root is at the rider pads. Below it is the wise jumper Mimes well. The third root, which is heavily attacked by Nidhogg, extends to Nivlheim. Below it is the well Hvergelme.

The name Yggdrasil comes from Norse Ygg, 'The Fearful (s)', which is one of the names of Odin, and Drasill, 'Horse' or 'Galge'. Possibly, the name is because Odin once hung him self up in the tree, as a offering to gain power over the runes and their knowledge.
