Indoor Plant Trends Driven By Social Media

I have been on instagram a lot in preparation for my Nordic trip and have noticed how the Nords use indoor plants to enhance those gorgeous minimal spaces whether it’s apartments, restaurants, stores or hotels. Scrolling through them every morning makes me so happy (and there’s even a hashtag for that #plantsmakepeoplehappy with 477K posts). And since instagram always provides a great touchstone for me for what’s trending on any particular subject, check this out:

Plant trends from the 70’s and 80’s are becoming especially popular including monsteras, ribbon plants, succulents, philodendrons and ferns. I’ve heard that nurseries and plant stores are having a tough time meeting the demand, since some of these plants have been NOT trendy so nobody’s been growing them. And sticking with the throwback/retro theme, read on below for a fascinating (if somewhat questionable) design trends study from Digital Third Coast based on Google search data from 2004 to 2017. According to Digital Third Coast’s latest design trends study, earthy items such as terrariumsand succulents are all the rage in home decor right now, and retro items, such as vintage avocado-colored fridges, are slowly making a comeback.Terrariums grew in popularity during 2017 with 450K google searches per month.Succulents started booming in 2015 and now get 368K google searches per month.

Bottom Line.I’ve always been challenged by plants. I buy them and they immediately start dropping their leaves and pretending they’re dead. Then some green-thumbed friend comes by and boom, just like that they come back to life. Very fickle. For the last year or so, I have struck up a great relationship with two of my plants. They are flourishing and I couldn’t be more proud of my indoor gardening skills as well as by the tenacity of those plants. While I’m a nervous Nelly when it comes to plants, Brad’s approach to gardening is totally random and freestyle. He plants and takes care of our fire escape garden which he grows from seeds so he doesn’t even know what’s growing in which pot. He loves the randomness of it. He also grows sage, basil, mint and other herbs for cooking.I’m not sure if everyone finds plants as challenging as I do but I stick with it because I do love being surrounded by these living accent pieces and am doing my best to keep them happy and alive on the Lower East Side.
