Hot Tamale

Tamale is the Northern Regional capital of Ghana. It's the largest reason by way of size. It's also one of the hottest capitals in Ghana. I've never been there myself but my maternal grandfather used to be an agricultural extension officer stationed there.

I lived with him from 2003 until he died in 2016 so I got to learn a little about his past. He always said Tamale had extremes of weather. When it starts raining, it rains very heavily and the Northerners, as they are popularly called are used to it. The heavy rains don't cause flooding as their settlements are planed.

He also spoke about how hot Tamale could get. People often wore hats to cover their heads during the hot season because they said the heat was so severe that it could penetrate your skull. They wore round hats woven by hand from dried grass or palm fronds.

Growing up, I never liked applying pomade or body cream, so he will often say if I was in Tamale, my skin would have been broken. He used to recall how blood could ooze from someone's nose just because of the heat in Tamale. I'm glad the weather in the southern part of Ghana isn't that extreme.
