Making a 100 kilometer skiing trip in just one day. For a lot of people it sounds like crazy, but this running gag is been amongst our group of friends for years now already. And now it was my turn to try
So how on earth do you make a 100 kilometer trip in just one day. Well, we also tend put in the distance that you put in with the lifts that are bringing you up, otherwise it is uper difficult so measure what you did.
On the majority of the days lifts will open around 830/900 and close around 1600/1630 (often dependent on how early it gets dark.) This week was the shortest day ofcourse, so skiing half in the dark is not really wat you want to do. From previous experiences I know that in general the progress what you make is around 15 kilometers per hour. This ofcourse does not include waiting in line for lifts, on your friends, taking a pee, eating and all those other things. And that is why you really have to make an effort in getting this done. And apart from the logistics, 100 kilometers is also crap far!
So a lot of the factors were not entirely in favor, but that is the reality you have to deal with in your challenge. With Stuben as a home basis and a big fat snowfall the day after a nearly being flooded out the day before prior this was surely not helping. Point one, fresh snow will get super heavy when it lands on heavily saturated snow, and that will kill your legs during the day. Point two, the most important connective skilift was closed down in the morning due to preventive avalanche shooting because of the heavy snowfall. But with no connection it means making a travel by road AKA losing time.
Sometimes GPS has some issues or I am actually capable of skiing 220 km/h ;)
Also it was Christmas day, so there was quite some activity going on on the slopes, which means some occasional waiting here and there. The day started out with perfect weather which you really need to accumulate some speed in what you are doing. But when going towards the end of the day with still about 25 kilometers to go in the last 1.5 hour, all of a sudden the weather changed. Skies started to become cloudy, and with the sun dropping behind the mountains, all of a sudden it meant that visibility turned into ZERO.
The combination of the visibility with the inkicking fatigue (and also loss of sharpness with that) made me decide to forfeit my own challenge at 84 kilometer with still 1 hour to go.
