Freeware Gems : F.lux

Being a fan of freeware and open source, I constantly come across very useful apps that make my work on the computer much easier. Over the years I found some to be even better than paid software. From audio editing programs to file management tools and many other hidden gems on the web. I'll be sharing with you my favorite freeware programs you might have missed.

F.lux

Flux is a little app that will run on almost any machine, without affecting the computer performance. What it basically does is to adopt the color temperature of your computer screen according to the time of the day.

Why is that important?

Working for long hours in front of a computer can cause various health problems. Eye protection is vital for everyone, and should be considered as a serious matter. It is important not to use very bright screens because they cause headaches and eye fatigue.
During day time we are exposed to blue light from the sun, and as the night falls the blue spectrum gets less visible and we are exposed to reddish hues.
F.lux does exactly that. It will shift the color temperature of your screen according to the time of the day. I've been using it for years, and can't imagine working late at night with a bright blue screen.
Also if you can afford it, buy anti-reflective glasses to protect you even more from harmful light. Use as much natural light your room has to offer. And most importantly, take breaks from the computer.

Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow? Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen? During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun. f.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.
