Files.fm - Library for the modern age

The old adage is that no-one got fired for choosing IBM, and when it comes to cloud storage it's tempting to choose one of the two biggest cloud providers: AWS or Microsoft Azure.

But while they may well be the best choice for many companies, they may not be the best choice for yours. Depending on the size of your organizations it may make sense to look at other storage providers who will be able to give you more attention in time of cost and functionality.

Most of cloud service providers are in the price range between 5 and 10 $ for 1 TB of storage space per month. It means that you are paying at least 60 dollars a year for a place to store your files. And buying 1 TB is one of the most favorable solutions: five times less storage will set you back around 36 $ per year.
Just a tip in the ice bag, Files.fm offer 1 TB of storage space for 99 dollars. This is not a monthly or yearly payment — it is a lifetime service. You pay 99 $ and get 1 TB for life. Not difficult to calculate: this investment pays off in less than two years.

Library is more than a place to read the latest chick-lits and thrillers. They are places for and of community — important beacons of wisdom and entertainment. Files.fm aim to be one of them. Files.fm community-powered library will be a place to share information, to safeguard knowledge for future generations and to give its users the chance to publish their works and earn money.

Files.fm is one of the oldest file storage and sharing services — the domain name was registered in 2007, while the full service launched in 2008. For comparison — Dropbox, one of the most popular file hosting services, was founded in 2007, while Google Drive was launched in 2012. In a way, files.fm was part of the first wave of file sync and storage services as we know them today. The main reason why this service was created was because the existing and popular files sharing services at the time were inconvenient — full of ads, limited download speed for free users, limited number of downloads per day, etc.

Library for the modern age
Files.fmis combining the best of centralized and P2P (peer-to-peer) file storage networks with more than 10 years of experience, a great team and an awesome idea, they will provide a platform for a library created by the community

How will it work?
First, each user can support the library by buying FFM tokens. They are the currency of Files.fm library. After the library is launched, you can spend the tokens there. If you are not interested in waiting, the tokens will be backed by real storage space — for each dollar spent, you will get 100 tokens which are equivalent to 1 GB of private storage space.

Secondly, Files.fm is planning to release beta version of the library to general public in 2019. Everyone is welcome to upload their content: funny videos, serious movies, books in English and in your native language, songs you’ve written, university lecture notes, high-school presentations, information booklets and infographics, unfinished novels, long-forgotten love poems, steamy fanfiction, beauty tips, vlogs, blog articles and anything else suitable for a modern, community-backed library. If the content is legal and the document is tagged with necessary information, there is a place for it in Files.fm library.

Thirdly, each user will have a chance to earn more tokens by providing storage space, tagging the provided material and submitting their content. You will be able to use the tokens to:

  1. Get storage space to keep your private files safely and securely — it is a service they have been providing successfully for the last decade.
  2. Download paid copyrighted content in a legal way. Content providers will receive remuneration for their contribution.
  3. Use pro features of Files.fm website.

Centralized systems are great for private secure use and for sharing a link with a few close friends. However, as soon as you want to provide your work to wider public, several issues arise. There are limits for how many people can download the specific work in an hour or in a day. There are file-size limits. File storage platforms ask the user to pay for download speed.

So, let’s put the file in a decentralized system and share with anyone interested? The so-called peer-to-peer networks are able to exist because millions of people use their devices and their bandwidth to share useful content. They offer the technical backing in exchange for useful files. However, these systems often run into their own difficulties. It is hard to back up data and to provide security. The system is often unstable: if the seeders go offline, it might not be possible to access files. Last, these systems often run into disagreements with the law: they often disregard copyrights and so are taken down due to legal issues.

This can be resolved by combining the best of both worlds: creating a community-powered digital library based on both centralized and decentralized systems. Files.fm has worked with file storage and sharing applications since 2007. They have used a semi-decentralized file storage system since 2013. Now they plan to implement it on an even larger scale and create a library where everyone can share with their content easily, without interruptions and with all necessary legal protection.

FFM tokens - The Files.fm utility token

The native currency of Files.fm is FFM tokens. Why do we need them?

  1. The library is based on a community reward system. Tokens are used to reward people for good work (providing content, tagging files, cleaning up the library, etc.) and can be spent to buy paid content, to get premium features or private storage space.
  2. FFM tokens are well-suited for enabling micro payments in the system. In many cases, the work will be rewarded with small sums of money — a large share of payments will happen under 1$. If we didn’t have FFM tokens, the micropayments would be swallowed up by transaction costs.
  3. The use of our the currency is cheaper for the user. When credit cards are used, 3% of the transaction + 0.30 $ for each transaction are paid to the bank. With cryptocurrencies, the commission is much lower.
  4. They will implement FFM token trade in the crypto exchange market without Files.fm as an intermediary. For cryptocurrency enthusiasts, it is provides an easy way to buy and sell tokens.
  5. Peer-to-peer cryptocurrency systems are the most transparent form of payments. They will use it because they want to be absolutely transparent about token transactions, their model and the payments authors receive.
