Revenge: The beginning and its reasons

One of YouTube's viral phenomena in the early months of the year was a revenge video created by Kyle Boggess, a young man from California who wanted to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine's Day. In the recording, one sees the young woman sitting on a couch, blindfolded, while his companion tells him that he has a gift and gives him a plastic cover with a sheet inside. When the girl takes the sale, she sees on the page the messages she exchanged on a page of meetings with another man, Boggess himself. He suspected his girlfriend's infidelity and created a false profile to search for her, find her, and make an appointment with her. The video ends with Boggess telling the young woman: "You'll be famous." The next day, the unloved lover released the scene on YouTube. Result: one hundred thousand views in fifteen days, proof that many like this kind of rematch.

The attention that these sentimental account adjustments arouse is such that in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries legislation has been enacted to curb the so-called porn revenge, the sex videos recorded in the Intimacy of the bed and publicized, more and more, by disgruntled ex-boyfriends.

This is just one more facet of the spectacular reprisals (the more public, the better) that fascinate us. Many football challenges heat up the media before they are played, with calls to vendetta for previous defeats. The revenge that explains some of the fugues that reveal cases of political corruption fills the newspapers, and the figure of the proverbial vigilante is omnipresent in our culture: from the literary count of Montecristo, from the nineteenth century to modern films (Kill Bill ...) The successful revenge has flooded adrenaline millions of readers and spectators. There are even reality shows devoted to the spectacle of revenge. We need that kind of character. As the anthropologist, Robert Boyd of the University of California at Los Angeles explains, groups that have avengers of injustice show greater adaptability, and hence survival. In a famous article on the cultural evolution of social punishment, Boyd brought together studies by himself and others to argue that the existence of a group formed only by altruists would be impossible.Indeed, in psychological experiments, when self-interested people are introduced into a collective, something that happens inevitably in real life, the role of those who carry out the revenge is essential to curb and neutralize the selfish. That is why, despite the evolution of our society, we continue to revel in stories of exemplary reparations, like those popularized for millennia by various civilizations.
